Professor Dr. Nael Bunni (1939 - 2025)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Dr. Nael Bunni, a distinguished figure in the fields of engineering, arbitration, and construction law, who left us on 25 November 2025, at the age of 86.

Born in Kirkuk, Iraq, in April 1939, Nael's journey was marked by academic excellence and professional distinction. A scholarship led him to Manchester in the 1960s, where he pursued his master's degree and met Anne Carroll, a Dubliner who would become his beloved wife for nearly sixty years until her passing in 2020. Nael completed his PhD at Queen Mary, London, in 1964, and after a period in Iraq, political unrest prompted his move to the Republic of Ireland in 1969.

Nael's career was characterised by his remarkable contributions to the world of dispute resolution, particularly in construction law which ultimately led him to this Society. His expertise was sought after globally, and his reputation as a chartered engineer and arbitrator was unparalleled. He authored numerous influential works, including the seminal "Construction Insurance," later expanded to "Risk and Insurance in Construction," co-authored with his daughter Lydia. His leadership roles included serving as the international president of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators from 2000 to 2001 and chairing its Irish Branch from 1986 to 1989. In recognition of his significant contributions, the Society of Construction Law awarded him their President’s Medal in 2021.

Dr. Bunni was a cornerstone of the FIDIC community from which many of us knew him, contributing to the development of pivotal contract suites and guides. His insights into risk, liability, and dispute resolution were invaluable, earning him FIDIC’s highest accolade, the Louis Prangey Award, in 2018. His legacy includes the forthcoming FIDIC Carbon Management Guide, a testament to his enduring impact.

Beyond his professional achievements, Nael was a cherished educator, having established and championed Trinity College Dublin's Diploma in Construction Law from 1996 until recently. His influence extended far beyond the British Isles, touching lives worldwide through lectures, training, and mentorship.

Nael Bunni was not only a titan in his field but also a man of warmth and generosity, remembered fondly by colleagues and students alike. His passing is a significant loss to the Arbitral and FIDIC communities, the construction industry, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Nael is survived by his six children, who carry forward his legacy of excellence and dedication. His contributions to engineering, arbitration, and construction law will continue to inspire future generations.

Nael you will be sorely missed.
